Understanding Travel Protection: A Guide for Luxury Travelers

Updated: 4 days ago
Many guests planning a vacation with us often believe that their medical insurance will cover them during international travel. They also think that trip protection is automatically part of their credit card benefits. Unfortunately, these beliefs are usually mistaken. Some guests even inquire about annual travel protection, thinking it might be a solution.
As a travel advisor with over 35 years of experience and being over 55, I know how crucial it is to examine travel policies carefully. One of the first aspects I look at is the medical evacuation limits. Over ten years ago, I had to arrange the evacuation of a guest who suffered a stroke while vacationing in North Carolina. The cost of a medical flight for a 45-50 minute journey back to New York was nearly fifteen thousand dollars. This amount had to be paid upfront to secure the flight. While Medicaid covered the hospital expenses, it did not cover any transportation costs. Additionally, the extended hotel stay and meals for his spouse were not covered.
The Importance of Medical Coverage
In Europe, I have organized numerous medical flights for different guests. Most of these flights cost over $50,000 and required extensive coordination. If you need a flight from Europe to the US, having a maximum travel insurance coverage of $50,000 will be insufficient. Many travelers are unaware that their personal health insurance and Medicare do not apply when they are outside the US. In many countries, you must pay for healthcare services upfront. In these cases, guests were completely uninsured.
Cancel For Any Reason Travel Protection
Included in many of our packages are cancel-for-any-reason trip protection plans. We provide two choices:
The first travel protection option provides you with a voucher valid for use within 12 months.
The second protection plan offers a credit back to your credit card, typically refunded within 30 days.
Both plans cover travel-related issues like trip delays, cancellations, lost baggage, and medical needs. They also provide 24/7 emergency assistance for medical care or claims. Neither plan requires a doctor's note if you cancel before traveling. If airfare is included in the package through Personal Escape Travel, non-refundable flights will also be refunded.
Annual Travel Protection Plans
Most yearly plans don't provide sufficient coverage for more than one or two major trips annually. It's advisable to review your average travel expenses from the past two years to determine if an annual travel plan suits your needs. If you frequently take local or smaller trips, it might serve as supplementary insurance. Ensure you thoroughly read the travel benefits section of the plan you're considering. Luxury and longer trips will need additional coverage to be well protected.
Since COVID, many credit card companies have limited or eliminated travel insurance as part of their offerings. Most employers no longer offer travel coverage either. It's best to contact your credit card company and have a full explanation of benefits sent to you in writing.
The Right Time to Purchase Travel Protection
We recommend that our guests purchase travel protection at the time of deposit. This way, they don't miss a deadline for purchasing the protection coverage. The biggest mistake people make is thinking that it won't happen to them and not taking trip protection. For adults traveling with parents who refuse to take coverage, consider adding them to your policy and paying for the coverage. This can give you peace of mind.
